چکیده

Abstract. Marine calcification is an important component of the global carbon cycle. The mechanism by which some organisms take up inorganic for production their shells or skeletons, however, remains only partly known. Although foraminifera are responsible a large part calcium carbonate production, process they concentrate debated. Some evidence suggests that seawater taken vacuolization and participates relatively unaltered in calcification, whereas other results suggest involvement transmembrane transport activity enzymes like carbonic anhydrase. Here, we tested whether inorganic-carbon uptake relies on anhydrase using incubation experiments with perforate, benthic, symbiont-bearing foraminifer Amphistegina lessonii. Calcification rates, determined alkalinity anomaly method, showed inhibition acetazolamide (AZ) stopped most process. Inhibition photosynthesis either 3-(3,4-Dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) incubating dark also decreased rates but to lesser degree than AZ. Results from this study show plays key role biomineralization lessonii indicates those benthic might, certain extent, benefit extra dissolved (DIC), causes ocean acidification.

When those invest...

Characterization and role of carbonic anhydrase in the calcification process of the azooxanthellate coral Tubastrea aurea

In zooxanthellate corals, the photosynthetic fixation of carbon dioxide and the precipitation of CaCO3 are intimately linked both spatially and temporally making it difficult to study carbon transport mechanisms involved in each pathway. When studying Tubastrea aurea, a coral devoid of zooxanthellae, we can focus on carbon transport mechanisms involved only in the calcification process. We perf...

Internal carbonic anhydrase activity in the tissue of scleractinian corals is sufficient to support proposed roles in photosynthesis and calcification.

Reef-building corals import inorganic carbon (Ci) to build their calcium carbonate skeletons and to support photosynthesis by the symbiotic algae that reside in their tissue. The internal pathways that deliver Ci for both photosynthesis and calcification are known to involve the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA), which interconverts CO2 and HCO3 (-). We have developed a method for absolute quantif...
